Kythera, or else Cerigo, is the island of goddess Urania Aphrodite and god Eros. Kythera is located in Southern Greece between southern Peloponnese and Crete . The island is mountainous with a lot of valleys leading to the sea and shape enchanting beaches. The extent of the island is roughly 280 square kilometres. The vegetation is luxuriant, mainly in the northern and western departments of island. The climate is Mediterranean , with enough humidity and strong winds mainly in winter. There are many springs flowing all the year long, in many places.

The resident population of Kythera is about three thousands. There are many small villages, straggling all over the land. The island is administrated by one municipality. The Municipality of Kythera and the Community of the Antikythera island depend on the Sub-prefecture of Kythera . The Sub-prefecture of Kythera is an administrative department of the Prefecture of Piraeus .

The locals have rural, trade and tourist occupations. The main rural products are the oil and the famous quality honey. During the last years, the big rate of tourist growth assembles many visitors but also evokes the attention of tourist enterprises.

The Kytherian cultural heritage is rich due to the charge of many populations. Monuments testify the history. The architecture of island is mainly influenced by the styles and motives of Venice , Crete and Mani. The Historical Archive of Kythera, lying in the Castle of Kythera (Chora ) of second importance after the Corfu one, keeping archives since the 16th century. The Byzantine monuments and the English buildings are gracing each corner and each side of the island. The archaeologists accompanied by organised teams reveal important finds and the discoveries testify glorious ages. The myth of Aphrodite revives people, stone and sea.
