PALEOCHORA

It is the destroyed Byzantine capital of Kythera. Agios Dimitrios, as it was named then, was a small state that was built in the limits of a fantastic wild gorge, named Kakia Lagada. The region is in northern side and the gorge falls into the northern coast. There, the residents were protected from the raids of pirates. In 1537 the janissary pirate Hayredin Barbarossa destroyed and looted Agios Dimitrios. Visit Paleochora to turn back in time, enter the Byzantine temples, admire the hagiographies and listen to the voices of women at the time of slaughter. If you want adventure and have mountain equipment start the access of the gorge. It's worthy trying, but you have to be careful because the level of danger is high. The street of Paleochora is earthen. The view from the castle to the gorge is really breathtaking.

KATOUNI
Katouni, kythera, kythira, kithiraIt is the bridge that was built during English domination. In the region of Kato Livadi, there is the bigger stone bridge that the English built in the Hellenic area. It has length 110 metres and maximum height 15 metres. With 13 arcs in absolute symmetry it appears monumentally in the wide extent of Livadi. The fable wants an english governor of the island, named Macfale to fall in love with a young girl from the homonym settlement. He decided to build a bridge near her house, so as to supervise work daily, and to be able to see her. Go a walk. The fable of the beautiful kytherian girl is still alive! Take photographs on the bridge.
SCHOOL OF MILAPIDEA
milapideaIt is one of the schools built on English domination. It is located near Livadi on a small elevation. It has beautiful architecture and is kept in very good situation. English compelled kytherians to send children to the English schools. Those who did not accept the English education for their children, they were forced to pay taxes or to work in public works on the island. There are many, almost facsimiled English schools on the island.
LIGHTHOUSE OF MOUDARI

It is the lighthouse lying in the northerner point of the island, in the cape Spathi . Built under English domination is the biggest that the English built in the hellenic area. It was constructed in 1857 and has height 25 metres. Next to the lighthouse you can see the signal-house (simatorio) that was informing the going through boats by using flags. It's worths the visit after ensuring a tour-guide. Take information from the village of Karavas . See the view after you go upstairs on the lighthouse. Magnificent view.
